How to Choose Your Driving Instructor

Driving Instructors

Driving Instructors

Driving Instructors are the persons that will actually deliver your Driving Lessons.

Some Driving Instructors operate as independents and some work within a Driving School. There are currently around 40,000 approved Driving Instructors registered with the UK’s governing body, the DVSA.

There are two types of Driving Instructors:

ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) Fully qualified:

Fully qualified Instructors will have completed a rigorous training program. They must display a green badge on the windscreen of their tuition vehicle and will be licensed to carry out paid driving lessons.

They must also complete a criminal record check (CRB) to make sure they are fit to supply driving lessons.

PDI (Provisional Driving Instructor) Trainee:

Trainee Instructors must display a pink badge. Even though they are licensed to carry out paid driving lessons, they are still in the qualifying process and still have to pass their final exams.

Never pay for Driving tuition unless an operating licence is clearly displayed in the vehicle windscreen. The Driving Instructor may be unlicensed to provide tuition.

Independent Driving Instructors

Independent Driving Instructors are not governed by a Driving School operating policy. They will vary enormously in the standards, service and tuition they provide.

A common misconception by the public is that ALL Driving Instructors are the same. Even though fully qualified instructors would have passed their qualifying exams, they vary enormously in the standards of both the customer service and level of tuition they offer.

Unfortunately, around 50% of all Driving Instructors never take any further development training from the day they qualify. Then it stands to reason that they would be lacking in recent developments such as client centred learning and the latest teaching techniques.

Many people will be unaware of this factor and often choose their driving instructor solely on the price of their driving lessons! This can be a huge mistake and all too often the “hidden cost of cheap” becomes obvious when a lack of progress is experienced.

Driving School Instructors

A very high proportion of driving instructors work under the umbrella of a driving school as a franchise.

There are many benefits for operating in this way.

The Driving School will usually make sure the instructor has a regular supply of new students. It will take care of admin, supply in-house training and take lesson payments.

This means that the instructors can focus on the delivery of driving lessons without all other aspects of operating as a sole trader or independent instructor.

Driving Instructors that have taken responsibility for their own development training will be more confident. Therefore they often have more confidence in their ability to offer a high standard of driving tuition and the price they charge will reflect this.

Driving Instructors that have not taken the time to keep up to date, will generally be the ones that offer “cheap” driving lessons. They will often advertise themselves as the cheapest instructor in town to attract sufficient work to survive.

How to Choose Your Driving Instructor

Performing a little research will often pay dividends before you choose your Driving Instructor or Driving School.

Using their lesson fees alone as a criteria to choose will often end in disaster as previously mentioned above, so what is the most reliable method for choosing?

First, begin by deciding on an independent instructor or one that works with a Driving School.

Please read our comprehensive article on the difference between choosing a Driving School and Driving Instructor.

Next step will be to read customer reviews on their websites or social media pages like Facebook. Most will have customer comments but these do not generally go into any detail as to exactly why they chose the instructor and what aspects of the tuition was important to them.
